Catan has been on kitchen tables since 1995. Most people play on the cardboard hex tiles that come in the box, and there's nothing wrong with that — until an elbow bumps the table, the whole map shifts, and someone's carefully-placed road ends up two hexes north of where it was. A custom wooden Catan board fixes that. It also makes the game feel like something you sit down to on purpose, not something you clear off the table when dinner's ready.
This guide walks through what to look for when you're buying one as a gift — for a partner, a parent, a Catan-obsessed friend, or yourself.
What actually makes a Catan board gift-worthy
A "wooden Catan board" search returns a lot of results. Most of them are laser-etched pieces of plywood with the hex outlines burned onto the surface. That looks fine in photos. In practice, the tiles still slide, because the surface is flat. If you want a board that will still be in use twenty years from now, look for these things:
- Precision-carved pockets, not printed tiles. Every hex tile and every harbor should drop into its own recessed pocket. If the tile can move, it will. Our design is patent-pending; every pocket is machined on a Shapeoko 5 Pro to a tolerance measured in thousandths of an inch, then hand-checked before the board leaves the shop.
- Real hardwood, single species. Some boards use plywood with a veneer on top. That's fine for a wall hanging, less fine for a board that will get set-down/picked-up thousands of times. Solid hardwood ages, dents, and picks up the story of the family that owns it. Plywood doesn't.
- A food-safe finish. This is a game board. There will be pretzels involved. Our boards are finished with Odie's Oil — a hardwax oil that soaks into the grain and cures food-safe. It doesn't sit on top like a lacquer; it becomes part of the wood.
- An engraved harbor ring. The resource icons around the border of the map are carved into the wood, not printed on a sticker. They stay clean and they read from across the table.
Choosing a species
Every Heirloom Inlay board is available in six American hardwoods. Each one has its own personality — the recipient's kitchen, the light in their game room, and how they take their coffee all matter more than any objective ranking. Some notes:
- Maple — creamy white, fine straight grain. The classic "wooden board game board" look. Reads well under warm light.
- White Oak — warm tan with distinctive ray flecks. Traditional and grown-up, without being fussy.
- Cherry — starts salmon-pink and darkens beautifully over the first year of use. If the gift is for someone who will notice a piece of wood changing over time, this is the one.
- Pecan — light tan with bold streaks of chocolate brown. Oklahoma-native. Reads warm and busy in a good way.
- Walnut — deep chocolate brown with an open grain. Formal without being cold. Photographs like a dream.
- Osage Orange — brilliant golden-yellow, native to Oklahoma. This is the loud one. If the recipient has a personality, this is the wood.
Pecan and Osage Orange are the two species you won't find on any other custom Catan board on the internet, because they're regional to us — our shop is in Tulsa, and both trees grow within an hour's drive of it.
Personalization: engraving
Every Heirloom board can be engraved on the face — text (a family name, a date, an inside joke), an image (a monogram, a logo, a hand-drawn hex), or both. Engraving is included as an option on all Heirloom products; the file goes to Bryce directly for a proof before we cut anything.
If the gift is for a wedding, an anniversary, a milestone, or a promotion, engraving is the piece that turns a beautiful board into a specific one.
Sizes — 2–4, 5–6, or both
Which size to give depends on the household:
- Most Catan is played 3–4 players. If the recipient plays at that scale, the Heirloom Inlay (2–4 Player) is the right board. This is the one shown in most of our photos.
- If the recipient owns the 5–6 player expansion (or you're gifting the expansion set alongside it), the Heirloom Inlay Expansion (5–6 Player) board is 37" tip to tip and fits the full expansion tile set.
- If the recipient plays both — or you don't want to choose — The Heir is a double-sided board. Standard layout on one face, expansion layout on the other. Flip and go. It's the piece we recommend when someone wants "the one to end all Catan boards."
The Field Edition (for outdoor and kid-friendly households)
Not every recipient wants a piece of hardwood on their kitchen table. If the gift is for a household with young kids, a boat, an RV, a patio, or a campsite, the Field Edition is a weatherproof HDPE (high-density polyethylene) board with the same patent-pending inlay pockets. It's food-safe, wipe-clean, and it doesn't care about spilled juice, salt spray, or a dog knocking it off the coffee table. It's the anti-heirloom heirloom — built for use, not display.
Ordering timeline
Every board is made to order in our shop in Tulsa. Lead times:
- Field Edition: 2–3 weeks
- Heirloom Inlay boards: 3–4 weeks
Ships insured. If the gift is for a specific date (birthday, holiday, anniversary), order at least 5 weeks out for Heirloom and 4 weeks out for Field Edition to leave room in the schedule.

We build a limited number of custom pieces each year, and Bryce responds to every intake form personally.
