Every board that leaves our shop gets the same finish: Odie's Oil. Not lacquer, not polyurethane, not a spray-on wipe-down. We settled on this after testing the alternatives, and the reasons are practical, not aesthetic.
What Odie's Oil Actually Is
Odie's Oil is a hardwax oil — a blend of natural oils and waxes that soaks into the wood fiber instead of forming a film on top of it. That's the core difference between it and film finishes like lacquer, polyurethane, or shellac. A film finish sits on the surface as a plastic-like layer. A penetrating oil finish becomes part of the wood itself.
The product is marketed and sold as food-safe once fully cured, which matters for a game board that sits on a table where people set down drinks, snacks, and hands that have been in a bowl of pretzels. We're not going to cite a lab certificate we don't have; what we can tell you is that it contains no solvents that need to off-gas and no heavy metal driers, which is why it carries that food-safe designation from the manufacturer.
Why Not Lacquer, Poly, or Urethane
Film finishes have real advantages — they build a hard, glossy shell and resist scratching better in raw hardness terms. We tested them early on and use them on nothing we sell now, for a few reasons specific to a Catan board with an inlay design:
- Film finishes crack and yellow. Poly and lacquer sit on top of the wood, and wood moves with humidity. Over years, that surface layer can craze, crack at seams, or yellow with UV exposure. Once that happens, fixing it means stripping and refinishing the whole surface.
- They obscure the wood. A thick poly coat adds a plastic sheen that flattens grain depth, especially on figured woods like our pecan and Osage orange. Hardwax oil keeps the grain looking like wood, because you're seeing the actual surface, not a coating over it.
- Inlay seams are a liability under film finishes. Our patent-pending inlay design fits hex pieces into carved pockets with tight tolerances. A brushed-on film finish pools unevenly at those seam lines and can trap air bubbles or build up a visible ridge. An oil finish soaks in evenly regardless of the seam geometry.
- Repair is a spot job, not a strip-down. If a poly finish gets damaged, you're sanding back to bare wood in that area, which shows as a repair. With an oil finish, a scuffed spot takes another light coat of oil and blends back in because there's no film to feather out.
How We Apply It
Every board is CNC-cut and hand-finished on our Shapeoko 5 Pro before the finish goes on. We sand through progressively finer grits after the hex inlay pockets are cut and fitted, then wipe the board down to remove dust. Odie's Oil goes on by hand with a cloth, worked into the grain and into the inlay seams, then wiped back so we're not leaving a puddled surface — the wood should look fed, not wet.
The oil needs time to cure before a board ships or gets used hard. We let it sit and cure rather than rushing a board out the door, because a finish that hasn't cured yet doesn't have its full water and stain resistance. This applies the same way across every species we offer — the oil behaves consistently on tight-grained hardwoods like white oak and on the more open-pored woods, though the cure time and final look shift slightly depending on how porous the wood is.
No Re-Application Needed for Normal Use
This is the practical case for hardwax oil over film finishes: under normal game-night use — hex pieces, dice, cards, drinks set down and picked back up — the finish we apply before shipping is what you play on for years. There's no maintenance schedule to keep, no annual poly recoat.
If the board sees heavier use over a long period — visible dryness, a duller sheen where hands rest most, or a spot that's seen a lot of wipe-downs — a very light re-oiling refreshes it. That's an occasional touch-up, not a requirement, and it's a five-minute job with a cloth and a small amount of oil, not a refinishing project.
Care Instructions
- Wipe up spills promptly. The oil resists water because it's soaked into the wood rather than sitting as a surface seal, but standing liquid left for hours is still liquid left on wood. Wipe it up like you would on any wood furniture.
- Use a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth for cleaning. No soaking, no submerging, no dishwasher (we shouldn't have to say that last one, but here we are).
- Skip the household cleaners. Skip ammonia-based glass cleaners, bleach, and silicone furniture polish. They don't damage the wood outright, but they interfere with the oil finish over time and aren't necessary anyway — a dry cloth handles crumbs and dust fine.
- Keep it out of direct sun for long stretches. UV exposure ages any wood finish. A board that lives on a sunny windowsill will darken and dull faster than one that comes out for game nights and goes back in a cabinet.
- Re-oil only if it looks thirsty. A thin coat of any food-safe hardwax oil, wiped on and wiped back off after a few minutes, is all it takes. Most boards won't need this for years.
Why It Matters for a Board You Keep
We build these to be handed down, not replaced. A board with a film finish has a shelf life measured by when that finish starts to fail. A board finished with an Odie's Oil hardwax has a finish that ages by getting richer, not by cracking or yellowing, and that can be refreshed in place instead of stripped and redone.
It's the same reasoning behind everything else on the build: the double-sided board we call The Heir gets flipped constantly between its two game layouts, which puts more wear on a finish than a single-sided board ever will. Odie's Oil holds up to that without needing a maintenance routine to keep pace. The same holds for our 5-6 player expansion board, which sees longer game nights and more hands resting on the surface than a standard two-to-four player table.
It's a finish decision made for a piece of furniture that's supposed to outlast the trends in tabletop gaming, not just look good in a product photo.
